BETWEEN THE IVORY TOWER AND REALITIES OF LIFE: WHERE ARE WE?

As doctoral researchers in the Arts and Humanities, we are often confronted with questions of originality and worthiness of our work, especially in the complicated times we are living in. Non-academic friends still ask you “what is it that you do again?”, while popular perception tends to see us as irrelevant and aloof. Today, how do we justify and explain the value of our work in terms that make sense to the wider public, even more so preoccupied with the harsh realities of our life (e.g. climate change, racism, misogyny, neonationalism, etc.). The metaphor of the ivory tower has been used to describe the world of academia for decades, but is that still a fair description, if it ever was?
