Come and join us in the beautiful setting of The Art Workers’ Guild for an afternoon of practical engagement with material processes – try your hand at techniques, talk to artists and art workers, listen to a thought-provoking keynote and network with your peers over lunch and a glass of wine.

Following almost two academic years online, we invite research students across the CHASE consortium who work with material artefacts or who are interested in materiality to join us on Friday 11th February for an afternoon of dialogue about techniques and methods for examining the material world.

Students will have the opportunity to reconnect as a research community for a day focused on the study of materiality through a series of practical demonstrations from Guild Members, spanning silversmithing, millinery, weaving and stone carving. You will gain an understanding of material processes and be able to try the techniques for yourself guided by experts.

The event will conclude with a drinks reception.

Material Witness is an interdisciplinary training programme for the interrogation of physical objects in the digital age by humanities researchers. Established by Professor Alixe Bovey and led by The Courtauld, it is the longest running CHASE training programme.
