BACKGROUND

We celebrate Shakespeare’s transformative impact on the world by conducting a radical theatrical experiment. Inspired and informed by the unique historic playing conditions of two beautiful iconic theatres, our diverse programme of work harnesses the power of performance, cultivates intellectual curiosity and excites learning to make Shakespeare accessible for all.

Social justice is at the heart of Globe Education. We run a year-round program of activities from Learning and Higher Education & Research teams. The department is one of the largest Education departments in an arts organisation in the UK.

PURPOSE OF JOB

The CHASE placement holder will work with the Head Research and the Teaching and Research Fellow in the Education department to provide research assistance to Education projects, Globe and Sam Wanamaker Playhouse productions and other institutional activity.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research/dramaturgical support for theatre productions

  • Write dramaturgical reports according to a house style

  • Help /support the running of Globe Research events, including lectures, conferences, seminars and Research in Action workshops

  • Contribute to the Globe blog and help answer queries from social media

  • Conduct research on a range of topics for departments including Education, Visitor and Audience Operations, and Digital and Data

  • Support the Director of Education, Head of Research and Teaching and Research Fellow with research tasks 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Undertaking a PhD-level degree in Shakespeare Studies, Renaissance Studies or a similar discipline, or a holder of such a degree

  • Able to conduct research under time pressure to a high standard

  • A fluent, clear and compelling writer

  • Able to work within a team collaboratively

  • Proficient in the major administrative and online software packages

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines

  • Knowledge or interest in eco-critical approaches and issues related to theatre sustainability preferred but not essential.

  • A writing sample (500 to 1,000 words) on a topic related to early modern drama, culture or theatre history, written for a non-specialist audience.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

This is a fixed-term, and ideally part-time, role. Duration and hours to be determined in consultation among the placement holder, Head of Research and CHASE. Remuneration and expenses are handled by CHASE.

Hours: As arranged by placement holder and Head of Research.                               

Holiday: The annual holiday leave is 25 days per calendar year pro rata plus Bank Holidays.
