1300 Welcome

1330 Break out sessions

  • Mending and repair workshop
Do you have a T-shirt with moth holes in? Jeans that could do with patching up? A bag with unravelling seams? This mending workshop will provide you with all the materials and skills necessary to tackle your textiles that are torn, stained, worn, or in need of a bit of love. Drawing on traditions of repair from across different cultures, eras, and media, this visible mending session is all about taking things slowly, embracing flaws and imperfections, and recognising the beauty within them. Completely beginner-friendly – just come along with something you’d like to mend, and everything else will be provided.

  • Literary translation workshop

  • This is an introduction to translation as a creative writing process, as well as a mini-workshop, offering a glimpse of the process of translation. Further details for the session, including modest preparatory work, are here (Word document).

  • Join the DiSCo! (network session)

The Digital Studies Collective (DiSCo) will be talking about how the network supports their studies by being the perfect distraction from it! This year, they have hosted 9 weeks of bespoke training in "Doing Digital Methods"; that is, tools and techniques for conducting research on and with social media. They are also curating their own multi-media DiSCo Journal. Issue 1 is about the digital's phenomenological annihilation of time and is due for release in October with a London launch party. They want to tell you all why experimental publishing is important. They also think through plans for 2023, answer your questions and invite you to join the DiSCo!

  • Thinking Climate Justice in relation to our day-to-day reality as researchers (network session)

During their workshop at CHASE summer social, members of the CHASE Climate Justice Network invite interested people to engage with their current work in progress, a Climate Justice Toolkit for Doctoral and Early Career Researchers. They will ask participants to consider the implications of this document in terms of their individual research activities, as well as academic standards and practices at large, and welcome critical feedback and interventions.

  • Practice as Research (PaR) (network session)

The newly founded PaR Network is committed to creating at home at CHASE for Practice as Research students and scholars, and those interested in this growing methodological approach to research. This session will be a brief introduction to the Network's aims and ambitions, as well as an opportunity for you to sign up to their mailing list, and to have a say in what you would like the Network to do for you as researchers and passionate advocates of practice in its many forms.

  • Sussex campus boundary walk

Enjoy the beautiful countryside and wildlife around the University of Sussex campus. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing for a gentle walk in the South Downs National Park.
More information can be found here

  • Informal placements and training drop in with the CHASE team

Join the CHASE Placements and Partnerships Officer for your opportunity to ask any questions you have about placements and training with CHASE. You can drop into this session anytime between 1330 and 1500. No question too basic!
