1-1 publishing consultations on draft articles
These consultations are designed as follow-up to the workshop on Writing Articles for Publication in Peer-Reviewed Journals in the Arts and Humanities. Participants submit a draft article 5-6 weeks in advance, and receive detailed constructive feedback on their writing from an experienced academic publisher and research training consultant. Areas for comment typically include structure and presentation of the argument, use of secondary scholarship, how to highlight the original research contribution to best effect, ways to develop the wider implications, and questions of tone, style, and precision.
These depend on the individual and their article, and it's the point of 1-1 consultations that they are tailored and bespoke. However, typical outcomes include:
Advice on how to structure and strengthen the presentation of a scholarly argument
An increased focus on what's in it for the reader
Advice on ways to clarify, specify and highlight the original research contribution
Ideas on how to develop the wider implications of case study research
Heightened awareness of the effect of different patterns of citation, and an understanding of how to strengthen these in a more confident, critical handling of secondary scholarship
Detailed feedback on questions of style and tone
“‘I wanted to thank you again for your really helpful advice! My supervisors also wanted to see the feedback and were really pleased with this. I have put in a strong word with CHASE for this to be repeated as I think it is an invaluable opportunity.’”
“‘This was one of the most useful training sessions I have attended. Josie sent incredibly detailed and useful comments the day before, allowing me plenty of time to think about and respond to them, thus preparing myself for the discussion and getting the most out of it. Josie commented on lots of aspects including title, language, structure, argument, writing habits, etc and you really got the sense that she spent time reading and thinking about the article before commenting. I also very much appreciated her thoughts on my sources, possible analogies and more philosophical questions. This made the discussion very stimulating and motivating. The discussion was also really beneficial as it enabled me to ask questions that no-one else has the time to answer and discuss, and because of that I feel I have a better understanding not only about my own writing but about article publishing in general. Receiving such direct feedback from an expert is really valuable and has helped me more than group workshops, although they are very helpful too. I would advise anyone to take up the chance of a 1:1 tutorial with Josie.’”
