CHASE Brief Encounters Issue Eight - Call for papers

CHASE Brief Encounters Issue Eight is coming and we can’t wait to hear from you! Got an idea for an article humming in the back of your mind but no time to write the typical full 10,000 words? Or perhaps an old uni essay or chapter you keep dwelling on and want to update? Has a new book been published that you can’t wait to review? Or maybe you’ve been quietly composing a jazz song, writing a sonnet or filming a documentary? Brief Encounters is back and looking for submissions for its eighth issue. The deadline for submission of an abstract is the 30th November 2023.

Brief Encounters is an open-access, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, postgraduate journal organised by CHASE. All postgraduate research students, regardless of their funding status, are welcome to submit to the journal – as are all affiliated staff and CHASE alumni. We want to hear from all and any disciplines and offer a place for you to share your incredible work in a shorter format than a conventional academic journal. You’ll receive careful peer review for your submissions across the academic year and come September 2024 your name on a published article…

We are looking for:

  • academically rigorous and original articles (1000 to 5000 words).

  • reviews on an area of emerging scholarship (500 to 1,000 words).

  • creative work, such as fiction, short stories, poetry, video essays, documentaries, musical compositions, posters and photography (accompanied by a critical commentary of 500 to 4,000 words).

We cannot accept previously published work or simultaneous submissions. Authors retain all rights to their work. The acceptance of an abstract does not commit a research paper to inclusion in the journal; only after submission of full papers or other formats can the editors provide a decision, before the peer-review period.

For research students in particular, submitting to the journal presents an opportunity to experience the peer-review process, gain exposure and build your publication record. What’s not to love! To submit just email a brief academic bio along with an abstract/ proposal for your submission (250 words max) by 30th November 2023. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions on: chasedtpjournal@gmail.com or on twitter @CHASE_BE

We look forward to all your applications,

Lola, Jemma and Becky

Editors of Issue 8.
