‘Back on Track - Intensive Coaching’ Two Day Intensive Researcher Group Coaching

Training Organisation: Magnetic Ideals

Delivery: Online or in person, 2 non-consecutive full days

Programme Description:

In a world that is critically difficult and damaging to the individual PhD researcher, both in terms of workplace stress, mental health and pandemic related isolation and disruption, these two-day long sessions aim to allow researchers to develop and maintain a positive and nourishing relationship with their thesis research and their working practice.

The group activities are designed to build a positive relationship between researchers and their research work. Sessions can run with 6 - 12 people per session to keep discussion intimate and manageable. The activities are based on the activities that have yielded the most positive results for those students on the Back on Track one-to-one coaching sessions that have been running since March 2021 with Magnetic Ideals.

While individual coaching (see Magnetic Ideals one-to-one coaching) may work better for some researchers, the group sessions also allow for people to share experiences and develop networks. The sessions are delivered as two full day immersive sessions for 6 – 12 participants – sessions held 2 weeks apart to allow for progression – we encourage and welcome DTPs working in partnership to get maximum value from the sessions if they do not have the full 12 participants to fill spaces.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Planning and Organisational support: creating space to think realistically about how they can progress, thinking about obtaining research/life balance

  • Linking with Services and Building Networks: An opportunity for signposting to services and networks of support that can enhance a sense of belonging and promote wellbeing, also to signpost to mental health and medical services if needed. The group itself is a networking opportunity for the researchers involved

  • Wellbeing focused: It takes a holistic approach, and there is a chance to discuss all aspects that constitute the life of a researcher (family life, work-life, academic life, social life, health)

  • Confidence building: The sessions will focus on documenting progress made and potential, as well as planning and management. It aims to build confidence for those researchers who are struggling with issues of self-worth and imposter syndrome.

  • Sharing Good Practice: It will develop ways of tracking progress that the researcher can use and share best practice and techniques that others have found helpful

  • Covid safe: Provided either by phone call or online via video call.
